EMQB’s analysis on the pick:  Tebow is the ultimate boom or bust prospect.  He has all of the intangibles that you look for in a leader and quarterback.  Unfortunately his mechanics and knowledge of the passing game may require him to be a back up quarterback for several years but it worked out well for Philip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers.  

Pro Football Weekly’s scouting report: Has the mental toughness and intangibles to break through a brick wall and refuses to fail. Clearly looked out of his element at the Senior Bowl and is still very much a developmental project but has worked very hard to overhaul his mechanics under the tutelage of former NFL coaches, including Sam Wyche, trying to learn how to drop from under center, carry the ball high and shorten his release. May never be a classic, drop-back quarterback after coming from an unconventional, spread-option offense that will not allow for a speedy transition to the NFL. However, he has a special mental makeup and a tireless work ethic, and if he cannot win a starting QB job, could bring value as a short- yardage/goal-line runner and developmental H- back. Has the moxie and toughness to at least become a solid backup QB.

NFL projection: Top-50 pick.

GM Jr’s scouting report:  Tebow won the Heisman Trophy as a soph in 2007 and has received an enormous amount of national hope due to his outstanding production in Florida’s Spread Option Offense.  However, after breaking down the film of Tebow we cannot help but think that he is going to have real struggles to become a legitimate NFL QB.  Overall, Alex Smith played in the same offense at Utah under Coach Meyer and Vince Yong played in a very similar offense at Texas and both Smith and Young were better passers in college than Tebow has shown himself to be and they have both struggled to establish themselves as good passing quarterbacks in the NFL.  Tebow is going to have to adjust and learn to play in a more traditional pro style offense – Will need to have to line up under center, drop back to pass and red the defense while dropping back (which is much harder than when aligned in the shotgun).  Does Tebow have the physical tools to become a very good NFL QB?  Yes, there is no doubt.  However, the real questions is do we, in The War Room, believe he is worthy of a high draft pick and/or likely to become a good NFL QB?  The answer unfortunately is no. I say unfortunately because with the number of players who have gotten into trouble off the field in recent seasons the NFL could really use a kid like Tebow with such outstanding character and intangibles to make it and become a start that can lead his team year after year.  Tebow is going to be a huge test case for “Spread Option QBs” entering the NFL because if he does not make it you can be sure that many NFL teams will eliminate considering QBS that play in that system in college from being anything but 2^nd day draft prospects. 

Lindy’s Sports scouting report:  Tebow’s statistics were inflated by Meyer’s scheme.  He’ll need to improve an elongated release (including his low drop point), overall accuracy and feel in the pocket just to remain at quarterback in the NFL.  If he can improve his overall mechanics, Tebow has the intangibles every team is looking for at quarterback.

Stay Low to the Ground

In a recent interview with a St. Louis sports radio talk show, ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer brought up the subject of Sam Bradford. "In my opinion," Dilfer said of Bradford, "he is not even close to the best player in this draft."

He also stated that the St. Louis Rams selecting Bradford - with the first overall pick on April 22nd - could be a "catastrophic mistake".

He also mentions that he "believes Colt McCoy will be the best of the four quarterbacks". Those quarterbacks include Bradford and McCoy along with Jimmy Clausen and Tim Tebow. While the majority of "draft experts" have Bradford and Clausen ranked far ahead of Tebow and McCoy, it is not uncommon to have widely varying opinions on quarterback prospects. 

While I don't have a problem with Dilfer and his ability to evaluate quarterbacks, I do have an issue with the P.S. at the end of the ESPN blog that I found this story in: "Note: As Lori indicates via Facebook and as Dilfer mentioned in the interview, he has worked out with McCoy. They share the same agent, David Dunn."

This is what makes any information from the football media void of any value this time of year. Though Dilfer might have honestly assessed McCoy as the best quarterback in the draft, the fact is McCoy and Dilfer share the same agent. Being human and knowning Colt McCoy personally, it would be natural for Dilfer to favor a kid he knows over other prospects he doesn't.

Worse yet, the Rams have shown interest in McCoy as a second round pick. If the Rams would pass on Bradford with the first overall pick and go with a position other than quarterback, then McCoy would most likely be available with the first pick in the second round (33rd overall). The sooner McCoy gets picked, the bigger his contract is, and the more money Trent Dilfer's agent David Dunn makes.

When that NFL Draft smoke gets in your eyes, it burns. Make sure to stay low to the ground.

Enquiring Minds Want To Know

If you have been following this blog as closely as I have for it’s entire four day existence, then you will notice that my reoccurring theme and interest in football in that the sport is just a microcosm of our society.

My first post was on Tim Tebow and his personality and beliefs causing controversy. So I would like to update you on the latest “controversy” surrounding Mr. Tebow.

Pro Football Talk is reporting that Tebow asked for a prayer before taking a personality and intelligence test at the NFL combine and that an “anonymous” player responded with “Shut the f—k up” and that other players in the room laughed.

For those of you that don’t know, Pro Football Talk is the TMZ of the football media world. Their sheer amount of information and resources make them hard to ignore. This type of story is their expertise.

Tebow denied the story in an interview with PFT and said, ”One of the number one things for me is being someone of character and when I say something people can take it to the bank. That story is absolutely not true.” He also explained that BYU quarterback Max Hall was the only player he spoke to in a room of roughly one hundred.

The question is now this:  what kid would you rather have working for you or with you? The “anonymous” player that blurts out an expletive when you say something he doesn’t agree with or the one that is honest and isn’t hiding from his beliefs or opinions?

Tim Tebowitis

I have noticed that the majority of comments from users about Tim Tebow on blogs and forums (where public opinion is really formed) are negative. With this draft lacking a healthy or participating skill player near the top, Tebow has become its focus and that has caused some backlash (or Cushlash if that is more appropriate).

From my prospective, Tim Tebow’s wide ranging draft stock, views on faith, and undeniable leadership and character is giving this draft what it needs:  a story that brings in extreme viewpoints. Few people will sit around and debate the pedigree or selection of Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy. What they will do is discuss Tim Tebow regardless of where he is selected in the NFL draft.

When you have a person who is a quarterback, religious figure, and an anointed head figure rolled up into one , the media has a gold mine. It’s like having Brett Favre, the Pope, and George W. Bush rolled up into one. Make no mistake, Tim Tebow will continue to use this media coverage to get his viewpoints across and the media will continue to eat it up until the real season kicks off.

So love them or hate them, figures like Tim Tebow will dominate the big time football media as long as we continue to love them or hate them.
