Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cincinnati
Ht: 6' 0" Wt: 179
EMQB’s analysis on the pick: Gilyard has off field issues and does not have elite NFL speed but is an intriguing playmaker none the less. The Rams are looking to add weapons to help Bradford in his rookie season.
Lindy’s Sports scouting report: Gilyard has one of this draft’s most intriguing stories, as he worked his way back into the program after being stripped of his scholarship following an accusation of cheating by one of his professors in 2006. Gilyard slept in his car for a few months, working part-time jobs to pay off creditors and performing community service. He returned to Cincinnati in 2007 and thrived in coach Brian Kelly’s offense. Although his lanky build, average timed speed and past personal issue swill turn off some scouts, the physical and mental toughness he’s displayed over the past few seasons – along with his elusiveness as a receiver and return specialist – should overcome those stigmas to make him a top 75 pick.
100.) Minnesota Vikings
Everson Griffen, DE/OLB, USC
Ht:6’ 3 3/8” Wt: 273
EMQB’s analysis on the pick: This player falling this far has become a bit of a mystery. Griffen was rated as high as a first or second-round pick but obviously has some other issues. An inconsistent effort is one of these issues, but he has top end athleticism.
Pro Football Weekly’s scouting report: Has first-round talent and has long been viewed as a star-in-waiting, but did not live up to the hype at USC. Teased evaluators with his quickness, power and explosion early in the season but was sidetracked by injuries and fell off in the second half of the season. Has an intriguing skill set with disruptive quickness and edge burst, but comes with a “buyer beware” label due to intermittent intensity, lack of discipline and questions about his mental makeup. Overall lack of toughness could push him to the second round and keep him from ever realizing his potential.
NFL projection: Top-50 pick.
Lindy’s Sports scouting report: Blessed with good size, strength and the athleticism to jump up the board in workouts, Griffen is an intriguing prospect who might just be scratching the surface of his potential. His agility and straight-line speed might be enough to convince scouts that his future position should be as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme. Regardless of his pro position, teams will have to judge how likely it is that he’ll return to his inconsistent ways once he cashes that first NFL paycheck.
101.) Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Mike Williams, WR, Syracuse
Ht: 6' 2" Wt: 212
EMQB’s analysis on the pick: Another player with serious character issues, Williams - if he can keep clean off the field - could develop into a solid if not spectacular starter for Tampa Bay.
Lindy’s Sports scouting report: There’s no doubting Williams’ combination of size, strength and speed. But NFL scouts have serious concerns about his character and maturity. It seems unlikely he’ll be a top 50 pick because of those concerns, but a team could get a good find in the second or third round if he decides he’s ready to commit himself to the game.
102.) Houston Texans
Darryl Sharpton, LB, Miami
Ht: 6' 0" Wt: 229
EMQB’s analysis on the pick: Sharpton is an excellent athlete and a typical small but fast Miami linebacker. He should fit in well in Houston's front seven as a rotational player.
Lindy’s Sports scouting report: Sharpton is viewed by some scouts and as an ascending talent and a better athlete than football player. His experience at multiple positions is an asset, though some consider him to be a bit of a ‘tweener, with the athleticism (but not the size) for the outside but not the instincts and use of hands to defeat blocks playing inside.
103). Washington Redskins
Perry Riley, LB, LSU
Ht: 6' 1" Wt: 245
EMQB’s analysis on the pick: Not an elite athlete, Riley is tough enough to come in and contribute on special teams and play in spots for the Redskins next season.
Pro Football Weekly’s scouting report: Played on the weak side as a senior but is best suited for the inside in the pros. Brings the wood and is a physical enough run defender to be effective on first and second down. Solid performance at the Combine might have helped his draft status.
NFL projection: Third- to fourth-round pick.
104.) Tennessee Titans
Alterraun Verner, CB, UCLA
Ht: 5' 10" Wt: 189
EMQB’s analysis on the pick: Verner is another excellent football player that has dropped because he did not time well in the 40-yard dash. Very aggressive, he could become an excellent nickel corner for the Titans.
Pro Football Weekly’s scouting report: Short, squatty, short-area zone cor- ner who does not “wow” you athletically but is experienced, possesses natural ball skills and has been very productive.
NFL projection: Fourth- to fifth-round pick.
